The Early Years

It all started with a dream.  A dream to be the best.  When we opened our first hair salon, we set our goals high.  We didn’t care about awards, we just wanted to provide great service and make people feel better about themselves.  We wanted clients to walk in with hope and walk out with with a smile.  Quite simply, we wanted to make our little corner of the world a more beautiful place.

Hire the Best

Therefore, we set out on a mission to hire Houston’s best hair stylists. We didn’t care if they were young or old, or if they had a clientele. We just wanted to surround ourselves with the most creative, talented and passionate hair stylists that we could find.  Shorty thereafter, The Upper Hand became known as a progressive and stylist friendly hair salon. We encouraged stylists with a fashion forward and free thinking environment. In addition, we sent hair stylists to industry leading education and events in New York, Los Angeles, London, Chicago, Miami, Paris, Toronto and Stockholm. Never one to stop learning, this year several members of our artistic team will travel to Barcelona for Goldwell’s ColorZoom.

The Awards

As a result of our passionate and educated team, our work began appearing in local and national media outlets.  Having earned the favor of both clients and the media, we were nominated for, and won, several industry awards. The Upper Hand has won over 20 first place awards in CitySearch’s Best of Houston contest.  These include best hair color, best highlights and best haircut to name a few.  While we love all of the awards, we are most proud of CitySearch and Click2Houston naming us one of Houston’s Best Hair Salons.

In addition, we are a five time winner of Elle Magazine’s Top 100 US Hair Salons. Other awards include five Goldwell Titanium Awards, Two Talk of the Town awards and Hey, Hey Gorgeous naming us as one of the best hair salons in America.
