Hair Color in Houston
History of Hair Color
American’s love hair color and Houston is no exception. Currently, 70% to 75% of American women color their hair. Some go to hair salons. Some buy box color from their grocery store. To be honest, coloring your hair is nothing new. Around 1400 BC, Egyptian women started using henna to tone down their gray. The Greeks and Romans follow shortly thereafter and added indigo to the color mix. Black hair ruled the fashion scene until turmeric burst on to the scene around 700 AD which gave blondes a color boost.
Colorants remained plant based until 1907 when Eugene Schuller, the founder of L’Oreal, developed the first commercial hair dye. The hair color industry took another step forward in 1931 when Jean Harlow’s film, Platinum Blonde, debuted. While not a box office smash, Platinum Blonde secured Jean Harlow’s legacy. It also sent women all over America running to their local hair salons asking to be a blonde. Unfortunately, up until 1950, becoming a blonde required large amounts of bleach which often damaged the hair.
